Lecture 3: Words Exercise
This exercise applies the tips you learned in the Words lecture. In this lecture, you practice Zinnser's bracket technique learned in the "Words" lecture.
Strategy 1 Words
Practice William Zinnser’s Bracket Technique with these sentences. Based the on Strategy 1 lecture, put brackets around unnecessary words. Write or print the sentence and add brackets around any words not doing useful work. Then rewrite the sentence correctly, excluding what was included in the brackets. You may make minor grammatical and word adjustments to sentences as needed.
There may be more than one correct way to simplify this sentence, but look at the answers to each sentence in the next document to see a better version of each sentence after using the bracket technique and cutting everything in brackets:
1. As the golden yellow sun sank slowly on the western horizon, the cowboy quickly rode away on his galloping horse without ever looking back at all.
2.Trisha, who is William’s sister, is coming to visit in New York for a month in the month of January. She wants to see about moving to the Big Apple if she likes it in order to find a job as a model.
3. In order to become certified as a yoga instructor, you must take months of extensive classes and know all of the practices and poses intimately to pass the examination that gives you your certification.
